Episode #668 of Hometown Heroes, airing February 12-15, 2021, details the new book Tears of Honor, released this week to coincide with the annual Day of Remembrance, observed each year in the Japanese-American community along the anniversary of Executive Order 9066.
“A sweeping novel of history, war, and courage in the face of injustice, Tears of Honor tells the story of the heroic Japanese American soldiers who fought against Nazi tyranny in Europe, while their families were imprisoned in America.” – Quill Driver Books
In addition to discussion of the book with its author, James Ardaiz, a former appellate court justice, you’ll hear brief memories from Nisei veterans Sherman Kishi and Lawson Sakai, as well a short liberation account from Al Tortolano. Tortolano was one of the 211 men of the “Lost Battalion” famously rescued by the “Go For Broke” soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in the Vosges Mountains in 1944, and was also one of the many veterans interviewed by Ardaiz in his years of research that led to the publication of Tears of Honor.
