Episode #693 of Hometown Heroes, airing August 7-9, 2021, comes in the wake of the 76th anniversary of the sinking of the cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35). Access content from the ship’s virtual reunion on the USS Indianapolis facebook page. At the time of this airing, only five men remain who were spared in the miraculous rescue of 317 members of the cruiser’s crew 76 years ago.
The USS Indianapolis Legacy Organization will soon launch Project 888, and would love to have your help in the effort to honor all 879 crew members who died after the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine, as well as 9 who were killed in a kamikaze attack months earlier.
This episode includes the accounts of two of the five remaining Indianapolis survivors, Harold Bray and Adolfo “Harpo” Celaya, as well as Marine Corps veteran Moe Rana, who unloaded the cruiser’s top secret cargo on Tinian. You’ll also hear part of the trailer for USS Indianapolis: The Legacy, the acclaimed 2015 documentary by Sara Vladic that serves as the definitive oral history of the “Indy” saga.
