90-year-old Rolland Doerfer of Apopka, FL appears on episode #739 of Hometown Heroes, airing June 24-27, 2022. A native of Goodland, KS, Doerfer served in the Navy throughout the Korean War.
It was 72 years ago this weekend, on June 25, 1950, that North Korea invaded South Korea and began what we know now as the Korean War. Over the next 37 months, the 38th Parallel would become the focal point of world attention, with more than a dozen countries sending troops to a fight that claimed millions of lives. More than 54,000 Americans died during the Korean War, and the names of those killed in action are now being added to the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. When completed, the new wall of names will also include more than 7,000 fallen South Korean servicemen.
Happy everyday!
