Episode #749 of Hometown Heroes, airing September 2-8, 2022, marks the 80th anniversary of the Montford Point Marines, the first African-Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to all Montford Point Marines in 2012, but only about 2,000 of the approximately 20,000 eligible have claimed their medals, which can be awarded to a veteran’s family if he is deceased. An upcoming TV special produced by ABC stations tells the story of the Montford Point Marines, in hopes of locating more veterans and their families to received America’s highest civilian honor.
