89-year-old Herbert “Bud” Kirchhoff of Couer d’Alene, ID appears on episode #65 of Hometown Heroes, airing March 7, 2009. A native of Peoria, IL, Kirchhoff became a tank commander with the 192nd Tank Battalion in the Philippines at the outset of World War II. He survived the Bataan Death March, and the rest of WWII as a prisoner of the Japanese, losing more than 100 pounds in captivity.
